Specialized Bicycle Components issued the recall for more than 32,000 of its Vado and Como IGH e-bikes, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said in a news release on Thursday, Mar. 27. The problem affects e-bikes with a faulty chain or belt guard that doesn't fully cover the belt drive.
Loose clothing can get caught in the exposed belt, posing a fall hazard. The recall involves e-bikes sold nationwide between March 2021 and November 2024.
The e-bikes were available through authorized retailers and online for $3,250 to $5,750. There were also about 3,200 sold in Canada and around 190 in Mexico.
Affected models include the Como 3.0, 4.0, and 5.0 IGH series, as well as the Vado 3.0 and 5.0 IGH models. Step-through and ultra-light versions are also included.
The model number is printed on a black-and-white serial number label located on the underside of the e-bike's top tube. The e-bikes were sold in a variety of colors, including black, red, navy, gray, purple, white, sand, and yellow.
Although no injuries have been reported to the CPSC, Specialized is urging riders to stop using the e-bikes immediately. Owners can contact an authorized retailer for a free installation of an updated chain and belt guard.
Specialized Bicycle Components is contacting all known purchasers directly. Riders can also call the company at 877-808-8154 or learn more on Specialized's website.
Specialized, which is based in California, imported the e-bikes from Vietnam and Taiwan.
